New flight school opens at SNA

It has been more than 34 years since a helicopter flight school has opened its doors at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif. In fact Revolution Aviation is the first flight school locally to offer crossover training in helicopter, plane and UAV equipment, according to company officials.

The school was started by Mark Robinson, 33, who has worked as a safety pilot for Robinson Helicopter, police department and Goodyear Airship Operations.

“Our aim is to attract those who want a pilots license, but also attract those who want to get in to the aviation industry without leaving the ground,” he said.

By flying UAVs, Revolution is one of the first schools in the United States to offer training, not just commercial operations like filming.

With the market growing in UAVs it appears more companies are requiring a basic knowledge of aviator skills and a pilot license will soon be required to operate commercially operated drones, he noted.

Those who enroll end up wanting to also fly helicopters, he added.

Revolution has four helicopters, one plane, two drones and eight pilots with two Office staff.
